Position Summary

The Legacy for Airway Health (LAH) is an exciting initiative rooted in research that embraces principles of individual and community engagement, and breaking silos between academic groups and those in-the-trenches of patient care and public health, so that knowledge is generated and translated most effectively. We accomplish our goal by accelerating the creation and leveraging of knowledge to inform improvements in prevention and care of populations at risk for, and living with, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Based within the Centre for Lung Health (CLH) at the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI), and powerfully elevated by broad partnerships, LAH leverages already well-established and globally respected clinical research and care programs located at the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and VHCRI and linked academically to the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU). Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, VGH&UBC Hospital Foundation, and the VGH and UBC Divisions of Respiratory Medicine are key partners of LAH and collectively inform and enrich its direction.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Associate in Implementation Science (IS) to advance IS for COPD and asthma prevention and care. The successful candidate will play a central role in leading research focused on policy, practice and behaviour change, as well as evaluation of the process by which research findings are implemented into public health and care delivery settings, within a framework committed to impactful improvements in health outcomes.

Reporting to the Director and based at the VGH campus, the Research Associate will lead an IS-centred portfolio of research, consistent with the above framework, and also support LAH and CLH researchers and partners (including health authorities, professional associations, not-for-profit organizations) to advance research on, and evaluation of, implementation-based objectives. In the context of this portfolio, the Research Associate will advance generation of evidence reflective of IS theories, frameworks, models, strategies and tools, throughout the research continuum. This expertise will strengthen LAH and CLH as we work to further identify and address research gaps, strengthen the knowledge cycle, and catalyze practice and policy change at individual, organization and systems levels.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee implementation science-related projects related to COPD and asthma prevention and care;
  • Utilize IS models, theories, frameworks, strategies and tools in research that informs implementation and evaluation of improved approaches to public health and clinical care relevant to airways disease;
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including partners responsible for implementation of research findings into clinical practice and policy development;
  • Lead and contribute to the development of competitive grant proposals related to IS projects
  • Mentor and supervise junior researchers and staff.



  • Ph.D. and post-doctoral experience in a relevant field (e.g., Health Sciences, Public Health, Implementation Science); mixed method expertise therein is preferred;
  • Demonstrated expertise in research utilizing IS models, theories, frameworks, strategies and tools, and experience incorporating IS framework into system level projects;
  • Proven experience in leading research projects related to public health and/or healthcare policy and practice change;
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience in building partnerships and collaborations with health system managers and leaders, communities, and other organizations;
  • Experience in mentoring and supervising junior researchers is preferred.
